As sailors gear up for the exhilarating Newport Bermuda Sailing Race, safety remains a top priority. With the race spanning over 600 nautical miles of challenging oceanic terrain, ensuring the well-being of both crew and vessel is paramount. Let's delve into the safety requirements outlined for monohull boats participating in this prestigious event.
 
You are required to have a knife to release yourself from your lifejacket harness and safety tether, you can use the models of Spinlock lifejacket with Harness Release System which satisfies this requirement.
Your lifejacket must have the following:

Crotch strap  ✔ 

Safety harness  ✔

Whistle  ✔

Retro-reflective material  ✔

SOLAS approved lifejacket light  ✔

Spray hood  ✔

Space in the neck to clearly mark with name (wearer or yacht)  ✔
 

You will also need:

A safety tether / safety line not more than 6’ 7” (2m) long with a breaking strength of 4,500 lbs (20 kN). The tether shall have a snap hook at its far end and a means to quickly disconnect the tether at the chest end.

Personal AIS Beacons: Each crewmember shall have a dedicated AIS personal crew overboard beacon. This shall be on the crewmember’s person whenever a lifejacket is worn
