The Duke of Edinburgh honours Island marine manufacturer Spinlock with King’s Award for Enterprise

Leading marine equipment specialist Spinlock received the King’s Award for Enterprise, Innovation from The Duke of Edinburgh at its Cowes-based production facility on 1 May, 2024.

The Duke presented the prestigious award to Spinlock’s Chief Executive Chris Hill and Chief Operations Officer Caroline Senior, in recognition of the ALTO, a waist-worn lifesaving device.

The ALTO was designed by Spinlock’s in-house team of engineers and technical textile specialists to combine convenience with safety. In place of a bulkier, body-worn buoyancy aid, this waist-worn compact product benefits from a smaller-packed volume which, when activated, inflates a bright yellow horseshoe ring attached to the waistband.

The Duke was accompanied by Isle of Wight’s Deputy Lieutenant Mrs Claire Locke. He congratulated Spinlock’s team on their achievement after taking a tour of the production facility, where he was introduced to Production Supervisor Mark Manning, Inflation Team Lead Kitti Zsibai, Compliance Support Edina Bobak, Senior Design Engineer Henry Marsh, Sales & Marketing Manager James Hall and Product Manager Myles Uren, who demonstrated the ALTO product.

Spinlock CEO Chris Hill said: “We were delighted to receive an inaugural King’s Award for Enterprise, Innovation and honoured that HRH The Duke of Edinburgh visited our production facility in Cowes to make the presentation.

“As previous proud recipients of a Queen’s Award for Enterprise, Innovation, plus an Enterprise, Export Award, Spinlock is aware of the influence and respect that accompanies this accolade. It is an honour that His Majesty The King has given his name to these prestigious awards to continue the recognition of enterprising achievements and commercial success.

COO Caroline Senior added: “With the summer season fast approaching, staying safe out on the water is a priority. The ALTO device is perfect for watersports pursuits such as paddleboarding, fishing and kayaking.”
